When you live in Medellín, you get a lot of opportunities to travel in Antioquía. And as we explained in our article about travelling through Colombia, the country has the 2nd highest number of non-working holidays in the world. Hence, you should take advantage of these days and continue exploring places that we know you’ll love. In short, they are pure combination of culture, traditions, landscapes, food and adventures to be made.

That is why we would like to give you some additional VICOmmendations of places you can easily go to for a week end in Antioquía. In case you missed our first article about this region, we have another list of the 4 best places to visit in Antioquía.

Fredonia – Antioquía’s free men land

A rich city, as much by its history as by its monuments

This municipality of the South West of Antioquía is an hour and a half from Medellín. As some of you might have guessed, “Freedom” is the word that inspired the name “Fredonia”. This is why we call it “the land of free men”. It is a town full of culture. For example, did you know that the most famous Colombian coffee icon, the muleteer Juan Valdes comes from this village? That’s right, one of the most representative figures in the country was born in the land “Fredonitas“.

So for example, you can visit the Cerro Combia Eclogical Park, the Monument to the Mother, among other touristic sites of the municipality.
Do not forget that it was one of the most important territories during the Spanish conquest and the roads of muleteers are still a symbol of Antioquia’s struggle. For example, the house museum Anzoátegui is one of the places you absolutely need to know. This place gathers pre-Columbian objects, goldsmiths and ceramics. Also, it owes its name to the Venezuelan General José Antonio Anzoátegui. He was one of the heroes of the Boyacá battle that sealed Colombia’s independence on August 7, 1819.
But let’s talk about what we are most interested in, the Fredonia parties:

Coffee parties, between December 25 and 29:

Approximately 20 coffee brands are produced in Fredonia. How not to make a party for this flagship product? During these days you will do horseback riding, corralejas (bullfights), concerts, coffee Parade, sports events, among other events. You guessed it, missing it is not an option!

How to get to Fredonia ?

You can take a bus in the South Terminal of the city of Medellín for the Fredonia Fleet LTDA. The tickets cost between $10,000 and $25,000 COP (between 3.5 and 8 USD).

Andes – As the mountain range

Located in the South West of Antioquia, it takes two and a half hours to go there from Medellín. The chivas (also stairs buses) of this town are officially intangible heritage. Indeed, these buses are particularly characterized by their color. They can also be used as a public transportation for the inhabitants of Andes. Finally, they are often turned into party bus where foreigners put music and dance while going through the city. Don’t leave Colombia without having crossed the chiva party bus out of your to do list!

The main sights you can enjoy are the San Juan Linear Park, Charcos del Tapartó, El Cóndor waterfall, Barro Blanco waterfall or Santa Rita lagoon. It surely is a territory rich in water sources and landscapes. But above all it is full of nature that will certainly give you some fresh air far from the city.
